In the Community. Vidiyal's community operations began in three slums of Madurai, Melavasal, Thideer Nagar and Valaiveesi Theppakulam, and has since expanded to include Heera Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Subraamainapuram Dalit Colony, Alavudeen Thoppu, Muthupatti, Keela Theree and Pandian Nagar. We support Vidiyal families with awareness programs about education, health and hygiene, child rights, maternity care. We interact frequently with the families, both through formal outreach programs and informally, at our centres, in the community, and on picnics and excursions. We provide family counseling, parenting workshops and teach effective child rearing workshops. We offer information on legal aid, job placements and referrals, medical camps, and operate a tailoring unit. Vidiyal Mothers - a close relationship From the beginning, Vidiyal has been determined to maintain close contact with the parents of the children who attend our centres and programmes. Vidiyial has forged a particularly strong relationship with many of the mothers of the children who attend Vidiyal. A monthly Mothers' Meet, in which Vidiyal mothers meet with the director and staff, allows Vidiyal to stay in close contact with children's families and other community members. The meetings provide an open forum for discussion of Vidiyal children's behavior at home and at Vidiyal, and their progress in school, as well as Many of the mothers have been involved with Vidiyal for years. In addition to monthly meetings, Vidiyal organizes regular picnics and outings for the children and their mothers, which allow parents and children to interact in a meaningful setting, momentarily free of the pressures and concerns of daily life. Tailoring Unit Vidiyal's tailoring center in Melavasal conducts a six month course for up to 18 women at one time. Our qualified instructor teaches the fundamentals of cutting and stitching; those who complete the course, in addition to learning a competitive skill that can bring employment either within or outside the home, also receive a new sewing machine on the basis of partial payment. |
