| Advocacy. At Vidiyal, advocacy on the local, regional, national and international level is an integral part of our strategy. Street Theatre in Madurai Formed in 2000, the Vidiyal Children's Cultural Team develops and performs plays and dances on important social themes. Members of the cultural team attend regular workshops on street theatre, mime, folk arts and choreography. The group has produced over 20 plays, which have been performed in schools and colleges, on street corners, at gatherings, conventions and on NGO platforms. Through the powerful portrayal of the social problems facing children, including discrimination against girl children, child trafficking and the plight of working children, Vidiyal both gives voice to the voiceless and instigates debate on all levels of society. At each performance, the echoing sound of the parai (Tamil folk drum) calls the audience to join hands in making a just society and a safe world for children. The Vidiyal Children's Cultural Team is the only children’s theatre group in Madurai whose performances focus on social themes and children’s rights. Working with Local Schools Through theatre and other engagements, Vidiyal children have started debates on child rights and the problems facing children at several large schools in Madurai, including St. Joseph's Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Lady Doak College and American College. In the Press Vidiyal has used the medium of the press to highlight the problems facing street and working children as well as simultaneously project alternate approaches fro the holistic development of these children.
